Uma* had lost her husband to COVID-19. A year later, her son died in an accident. Recently, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. During a home visit, she shared that she had become too unwell to care for her plants. Born out of the real challenges faced by individuals upon release from prison, the Support Group of Rumah Petros and Rumah Kepercayaan (halfway homes for male and female ex-prisoners) was established. The group provides a safe, like-minded community for those in recovery and reintegration. The monthly meetings offer a space for sharing life’s challenges, mutual encouragement, and prayer.
Home-based Learning Support (HBLS) is an online programme run by Malaysian CARE that
supports children who have difficulty in studying, mainly focusing on the fundamentals of

Grace*, a former resident of Rumah Kepercayaan (Malaysian CARE’s halfway home for
women) shares her journey of rebuilding life after prison. Her story highlights the realities of
starting over, the support she received, and the steps that led her towards a renewed sense of
purpose.

Our days were packed–meetings, case reports, home visits and follow-ups. It was another ordinary morning in the year 2023 at Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah, supporting the doctors and colleagues in attending to people living with HIV/AIDS who had defaulted in adhering to their medication schedules. My connection with Madam Mah began before the Movement Control Order (MCO) was implemented in 2020.
