GOD HEARD ME
Alex Low
Escaped death, survived 20 whips & restored
I started working at 12 and hooked on drugs at 16 years old. I indulged in it, thinking that it would bring me fulfilment. Slowly I began to realize that it was a never ending road to destruction. I tried all kinds of method to fight addiction but to no success. I was in and out of prison and rehab centres. It was 20 years of regrets and despair. I lost motivation to live and imagined that if I die by the roadside, nobody would bother. Who could help me? In 2002, I was charged under Section 39B and sentenced to death.
I was in the same cell with a Christian prisoner. He often encouraged me to join the prison Christian fellowship. Attracted by their joyful singing, I sang along with them. I accepted Jesus in 2005 at the prison Christmas celebration. I received the greatest gift in my life — God’s salvation. I prayed for freedom and God answered my prayer. I escaped death and was sentenced to 9 years imprisonment plus twenty whips. The twenty whips were carried out all at once. I endured every whip by calling out to Jesus. I was released right after the whipping having served 6 years and 10 months in prison.
The wounds were so bad that I couldn’t even move. I called Sam of Malaysian Care for help. He then brought me to Rumah Petros. The rules there were very strict and I were not allowed to do many things or go out. I felt uneasy because I wanted to go out to see the world. At the same time, I experienced some unusual things. The staff treated me so well. They took me to the hospital, taught me the Bible, gave me a place to stay and fed me. I wasn’t their relative and not even a friend. Later I found out that they did it because of God’s love. Galatians 2:20 says, “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.” I am very grateful to know the true God. He loves me, shows me mercy and listens to my prayers. His presence and strength enables me to live life anew. This new life is truly a gift from God. The journey is hard and long but I am not afraid because Jesus is with me.
My relationship with my mother has been restored because she saw the changes in me. I am thankful to God for giving me a good and beautiful wife. We got married on 22 March 2014. I love her very much. We are now running a chicken rice stall. God has been good to me. Knowing God is the greatest blessing in my life. Thank you, Jesus.- Seeing Posibilities
