FROM TESTING TO TRUSTING

Our walk of faith in Christ is a lifelong journey that requires our choices and actions to be totally surrendered to God’s will. Like many professing Christians, I had served in various leadership positions in church and the corporate world. But a call and invitation to lead Malaysian Care (MCare) transformed my life.

Whilst we believe in Christ and that he loves us, he expects us to demonstrate His love through sacrificial good works to alleviate the suffering of others, often at a cost. But to take over from the giant strides of MCare’s founding directors like Rev. Wong Kim Kong and Rev. Peter Young and without relevant experience or qualifications was ‘suicidal’, not just costly. Nonetheless, after months of struggle including trying a Gideon’s fleece on God, I relented. God reminded me that He had first spoken seven years ago through an article on Rev. Peter Young’s retirement from MCare. I had put that journaling aside and forgotten all about it.

Over the years, I have seen many hardcore addicts, the learning disabled, the rural and urban poor, who once were weak with little hope, transformed by Christ through MCare and its church partners and now serving and impacting others. Just the radiant smile of Hannah, a teenager with severe disabilities, was comforting and encouraging. Paul reminded the Corinthian church that God chose the foolish and weak things of the world to shame those who are wise and strong (1 Cor 1:26-29). Truly His grace is sufficient for them and that his power is made perfect in their weakness (2 Cor 12:9) as it was for Moses, Gideon, Paul and many others. Churches together with MCare were preaching and living out Micah 6:8.

God’s ways and thoughts are different and higher than ours (Isa 55:8-9). He inspired innovative ideas like kingdom partnership with bible colleges and churches. We learned to invest in people and the larger body of Christ, not just MCare. Fundraising was done mostly on our knees. When MCare ended one year with a large financial deficit, God taught us patience and trust as He only intervened later. Then He blessed us with our 6-storey headquarters, the 15-acre Ladang MCare for rural ministry and a steady stream of financial and people resources.

I thank God for His grace in my journey of faith. He built passion, perseverance and perspective that shaped and transformed me.
